The Barrens is an area of the continent that has been abandoned.[1]
Geography[]
The Barrens is a ruined, dry, desert-covered peninsula located at the southeastern tip of the continent, beyond Krovla.[2][3]The region shares its borders with Braevick along the Dunness River.[1]
History[]
During the Battle of Gianfar, gryphons and dragons fought together against the army of the Barrens. The army was annihilated. Because the venin draw their magic from the source instead of channelling through a dragon or gryphon, they drained all the magic out of the Barrens and then they spread like an infestation. After the Great War, the Barrens were abandoned by dragons, gryphons, and humans.[4][5][1]

Venin[]
Dark-wielders once human who drain magic from the source.[6][5] Once believed to originate exclusively from the Barrens, venin have been discovered within the past 50 years to emerge from other locations as well.[7][1]
General Daramor[]
Led the army of the Barrens during the Great War and nearly succeeded in destroying the continent, ruining the Barrens in the process.[4][1] He was labeled as the enemy of the First Six, as chronicled in The Unabridged History of the First Six.[8]

Gianfar[]
An ancient stronghold situated on the southern border, known as the site of the Battle of Gianfar during the Great War over six centuries ago. The stronghold was set for a siege, and was equipped with the first cross-bolt, which proved lethal against dragonkind.[9]

- The Fables of the Barren is a forbidden book containing tales of dark-wielding venin and their wyvern.[10]
- Viscount Tecarus used stones quarried from the land bordering the Barrens, east of the Dunness River, to construct his arena in Cordyn. These stones had already been drained of their magic.[11]
