Sloane Mairi is the daughter of Isaac Mairi, a former Lord in Tyrrendor, and Colonel Mairi. After her mother, Colonel Mairi, was executed for his involvement in the rebellion, and her father was executed at their family home, Sloane was separated from her brother Liam Mairi and fostered by a different family.

As the daughter of Isaac Mairi, a former Lord in Tyrrendor, and Colonel Mairi, she was raised alongside her brother, Liam Mairi, in Tyrrendor. After her parents execution she was separated from her brother and was fostered by a different family.
Iron Flame[]
Sloane enters Basgiath War College on Conscription Day, where she meets Violet just before crossing the parapet. She is visibly angry and projects her grief onto Violet, blaming her for her brother's death, wishing that no one will commend her soul to Malek. She actively refuses any help from Violet, who makes it her mission to keep Sloane alive as a promise she made to Liam before his death.
Since she did not receive combat training, she is a very weak fighter, and only won her first challenge against fellow first year Dasha Fabrren because Violet intervened and used her knowledge of poison to temporarily stun Sloane's opponent, giving her the opportunity she needed to win.
Violet tells Sloane that she has a stack of letters that Liam wrote for her, but she would only receive one letter for each week that she trained with Imogen.

Sloane has the same blond hair and sky-blue eyes as her brother Liam. Her rebellion relic winds around her arm.

Lesser Magic[]
Every rider is capable of using Lesser magic once their dragon begins channeling through them after Threshing. With this channeling, riders are able to; open doors without touching them, preternatural speed, manipulating mage lights, and powering ink pens.[1] Lesser magic also allows riders to place runes.

Her older brother, whose death hit her hard. The two were separated after their parents were executed, leaving only the letters Liam wrote to her during his time as Basgiath as the only thing she has left of him.
Violet Sorrengail[]
While Sorrengail was eager to help Mairi from the moment they met, Mairi blamed Sorrengail for the death of her older brother and was openly hostile towards her, initially refusing to be assigned to the same squad.

While most marked ones are assumed to know each other to some degree, Sloane specifically mentions Imogen having written her a letter the previous year. The letter is mentioned when Sloane tries to challenge Violet and says that Imogen told her that Violet's "joints pop right out."[4]
