Biography[]
Early Life[]
Sawyer is from Luceras, along the cold northern coast.[1] During his first year in the Riders Quadrant he did not bond with a dragon during Threshing but was able to repeat his first year. He did not tell his family he had to repeat a year, instead letting them believe that he could not write home for the first two years.[1]
Fourth Wing[]
On his repeated first year, he and Rhiannon Matthias agree to help Violet Sorrengail with hand-to-hand combat if Violet helps them with history, since it's not their strong suit.[2]
He is able to complete the Gauntlet with ease. During Threshing, he bonds to Sliseag, a red swordtail.
Iron Flame[]
Sawyer is selected by Squad Leader Rhiannon Matthias to be the Iron Squad's Executive Officer.[3] He loses one of his legs from below the knee to a wyvern bite at the Battle of Basgiath.
Physical Description[]
He is tall, lean, and wiry. He has a light complexion and lots of freckles that also run along his jaw.[4] Violet notes that on their Assessment Day Sawyer has a days growth of brown stubble that doesn't quite cover his freckles. [2]
During the final battle against the Venin in the events of Iron Flame, Sawyer loses one of his legs just below the knee to a wyvern bite while protecting his dragon Sliseag from being hurt. [5]
Personality[]
Since he is repeating his first year, he is comfortable with taking a leadership position amongst the other first-years in his squad.[4] He is cool and collected, he doesn't get angry or retaliate unnecessarily from personal insults. He's described as smart and athletic by Violet.[6]

Lesser Magic[]
Every rider is capable of using Lesser magic once their dragon begins channeling through them after Threshing. With this channeling, riders are able to; open doors without touching them, preternatural speed, manipulating mage lights, and powering ink pens.[7] Lesser magic also allows riders to place runes.

Sawyer and Rhiannon are friends, making up the Iron Squad friend group with Ridoc and Violet. They sleep together to celebrate bonding with dragons after Threshing. As second years, Rhiannon chooses Sawyer as her XO due to his qualifications, and over Violet because she has to travel frequently.
