Rhiannon Matthias is a second-year rider and Violet Sorrengail's best friend. In the Riders Quadrant at Basgiath War College. She is promoted to Squad Leader in Second Squad, Flame Section, Fourth Wing during her second year.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Rhiannon grew up in the Morraine Province[1] and always wanting to be a rider and told Violet that she was most excited to learn to ride dragons. Her parents have always known she wanted to join the Riders Quadrant and have been supportive. She has a twin named Raegan who, during Fourth Wing, is married and expecting a baby boy named Lucas.[2] Rhiannon learned to defend herself when she was fairly young due to the location of her village near the Cygnisen border. She was also taught physics and math, but notes that she hates history and is terrible at remembering dates.[1]
Fourth Wing[]
Rhiannon meets Violet before they cross the parapet. While going up the stairs, Violet asks to see the soles of Rhiannon's shoes and notices that they are smooth, so she and Violet switch left shoes so that Rhiannon can have at least one shoe with good traction[2]. After crossing the parapet, Rhiannon tells Violet that there were at least three times that she would have fallen if it weren't for her shoe.[3]
During Assessment Day she makes a deal with Violet and Sawyer that she would help train Violet in hand-to-hand combat if she helped them with history since it's her worst subject.[1] Professor Emetterio pairs her up against Tynan who she easily defeats, though he refuses to yield. [1] Her first challenge is against a guy from Second Wing.[4]
Iron Flame[]
Rhiannon is promoted to Squad Leader, as Dain Aetos is moved up to Wingleader due to the graduation of the third-years.
Violet, Rhiannon, Ridoc, and Sawyer are taken for interrogation training. They are each given classified information to protect during the weekend-long training. They are offered a patch if they manage to escape without breaking, which no squad has done in over a decade. Until the scenario begins, they are urged to eat and drink while sharing a secret that no one else knows. When they all lift their mugs to drink, Violet recognizes the smell of the elixir that severs the link to their dragons and signets. They dispose of the liquid and agree to fake the disconnect when their interrogators arrive. For several hours, each of them is beaten for information, but no one breaks. Eventually, Varrish, who specializes in torture, arrives with Dain. Violet fears which memories Dain might take and deliver to Varrish, who is already suspicious of her and Xaden. Varrish orders Dain to use his classified signet to pry information from Violet’s mind, but Dain refuses. Varrish decides to extend the interrogation another day and take the torture into his own hands. When Nolon is brought in to heal them, he leaves the window to the torture chamber door unlocked. The squad works together to break out of the interrogation chamber.
At Riorson House, Rhiannon, Sawyer, and Ridoc help Violet, Dain, and Jesinia go through the books Viscount Tecarus loaned Violet in Cordyn.
Physical Description[]

Rhiannon's high cheekbones and oval face remind Violet of the beauty of Amari, the queen of the gods. She has dark skin and brown eyes. Her dark brown hair is worn in several rows of short braids that just touch her neck. During sparring she often pins her braids back into a small bun at the nape of her neck.[1] She wears a size eight shoe.[2]
The fighting leathers she wears on Assessment Day also consist of a leather vest similar to Violet's corset. However the difference is that Rhiannon's cuts in above her collarbone and secures at her neck, leaving her shoulders bare for movement. [1]
Personality[]
Rhiannon is loyal, compassionate, and determined, but not someone to mess with. She is strong and a great fighter with a extremely strong leader-like personality. Rhiannon is also highly intelligent, acing her classes in physics and maths.[5]

Lesser Magic[]
As a rider whose dragon is channeling through them, Rhiannon is capable of performing lesser magic. With this channeling, she is able to do things like locking and unlocking doors without touching them, moving with preternatural speed, manipulate mage lights, and power ink pens. Lesser magic also allows her to place runes.[6]

Rhiannon can teleport objects to herself. As of Iron Flame, she can retrieve items as big as a person[7] and can even summon objects through walls.

Trained from a young age due to the location of her village near the cygnisen border. She's fast and her hits are powerful, the kind of lethal combination that Violet notes will set her apart just like Mira Sorrengail. [1] She gracefully climbs the gauntlet.[9]

Raegan Matthias[]
She is Rhiannon's twin who is married and expecting a baby before the start of Fourth Wing. Later on, Rhiannon announces that her nephews name is Lucas.
Violet Sorrengail[]
Violet made fast friends with Rhiannon on their first meeting. Before crossing the parapet, Violet traded one of her rubber-bottomed shoes with Rhiannon, so Rhiannon could have a better chance of surviving the crossing. Since that day, they were best friends through the first year, as well as squadmates. Rhiannon helps train Violet in sparring, while Violet helped Rhiannon in history. However, Violet did keep a few secrets from her friend, such as Xaden meeting with others marked with the rebellion relic, and Andara sharing her gift to stop time. Their relationship became more tense during their second year, when Violet had to keep even more secrets from her friend. Rhiannon could clearly see that both Violet was keeping secrets and that it was causing emotional stress.
Tara[]
Tara and Rhiannon have an on-again-off-again open relationship. Rhiannon opens up that being squad leader doesn't leave much time in her schedule to be together.[10]
Ridoc Gamlyn[]
Ridoc was a part of the second squad, flame section ,fourth wing from the beginning. Ridoc and Rhiannon became friends due to being on the same squad. They along with the other squad members helped each other throughout the first year and quickly became close friends and a very tightly knit unit.
Sawyer Henrick[]
Sawyer and Rhiannon are friends, making up the Iron Squad friend group with Ridoc and Violet. They sleep together to celebrate bonding with dragons after Threshing. As second-years, Rhiannon chooses Sawyer as her Executive Officer due to his qualifications, and over Violet because she has to travel frequently.
