Biography[]
Iron Flame[]
Professor Grady is new to teaching at Basgiath War College. He teaches Rider Survival Course (RSC), which is a second-year class kept secret from first-years. He explains to the cadets on their first day of class how they will learn how to survive if they are separated from their dragons behind enemy lines. He refuses to give specifics because they want the cadets to be surprised, but he promises to teach them navigation, survival techniques, and how to withstand interrogation[1]
Grady introduces Violet Sorrengail's squad to their first land navigation exercise, handing them waterskins containing a liquid that cuts them off from their dragons and their power. He agrees when Ridoc Gamlyn calls the move bullshit, but he tells the cadets that they are very proud of this new concoction and asks them to let him know if they feel any side effects.[2]
Grady lectures the cadets frequently about their inability to check their egos.[3]
When Grady corners Violet for her first interrogation, he finds her with Xaden Riorson and notes that she is hard to catch by surprise, thanks to the wards on her room that he assumes Xaden must have woven for her. While all of the other members of Violet's squad have their hands bound behind their back, Grady has mercy on Violet's injured shoulder and binds her hands in front of her, though Violet notes that the rope is very tight.[4]
Grady introduces the cadets to their first interrogation scenario, but tricks them into thinking that the scenario hasn't begun yet when he brings in food and drink, encouraging them to partake since it will be their last chance until the interrogation is over. He tells them that there is a patch available if they are able to escape, though no one has succeeded in the past decade.[5] The squad finds Grady sitting in a chair a few feet away from the door to the interrogation chamber when they escape, where he praises their success.[6]

Professor Grady is a tall man with a booming voice. He has a trim beard that's a shade darker than his light golden skin.[1]

Lesser Magic[]
Every rider is capable of using lesser magic once their dragon begins channeling through them after Threshing. With this channeling, riders are able to; open doors without touching them, preternatural speed, manipulating mage lights, and powering ink pens.[8] Lesser magic also allows riders to place runes.[9]
