Newland was a first-year cadet at the same time as Violet Sorrengail. He was in Second Squad, Flame Section, Fourth Wing. He was on breakfast duty with Violet.[1]
His name was read on the death roll the same day as Aurelie, meaning he also died on the first day of Gauntlet practice. However, this doesn't necessarily mean he died on the gauntlet.[1]
