Maren is a flier cadet who joined the Tyrrish Revolution.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Maren is originally from Draithus. She is a flier cadet who transferred from Cliffsbane Flight Academy to Aretia after the attack on Zoyla. She's in the same squad as Catriona Cordella and they are best friends. Her Gryphon's name is Dajalair, Daja for short.[1]
Iron Flame[]
Maren is paired with Violet Sorrengail as they hike up the Medaro Pass to reach Aretia. She explains to Violet that the fliers do not want to go to Aretia any more than the dragon riders want them there, but they are going because it is the best chance for survival for them and their people.[1]
During the hike, Maren tells Violet that all the fliers expected Xaden Riorson to kidnap Violet after Threshing his first year and gift her to the fliers. She says she was disappointed for Cat when Xaden broke off the betrothal, but she wasn't rooting for the toxic relationship they had. [1]
After nearly being taken out by a boulder on their hike, Maren explains how the bonding process works for fliers: they try to jump on the back of a gryphon as a group of them fly by over the river; no one dies, if they miss, they just choose a different branch for service.[1]
Maren and her gryphon struggle to get enough oxygen as they get close to the top of the cliff. She still manages to tease Dain Aetos for shortening Violet's estimate for the length of the sword hilt that Luella will use to help her pass a trap without triggering it. Maren encourages Luella as she attempts to cross.[1] When Luella misses her target and ultimately falls over the edge of the cliff to her death, Maren defends Violet to Cat who accuses Violet of dropping Luella. She reminds Cat that Luella's gryphon doesn't have long since gryphons die with their fliers, and they offer the gryphon comfort in his last minutes. Maren gives Violet a leather strap to bite down on as Dain resets her arm that was dislocated as Luella fell over the cliff.[2]
Once the fliers have settled at Basgiath, Violet's squad and Cat's drift are paired together to learn runes. Maren is the only one in the drift who doesn't blame Violet for letting Luella fall to her death and Sawyer and Violet agree that they like her. Maren blocks Trager from responding to Rhiannon Matthias' taunt. Maren is engaged in the rune lesson and wonders why no one teaches runes.[3]
Later, leadership encourages riders and fliers to challenge each other in sparring and Maren tries to talk Cat out of sparring with Violet.[4] When Cat is caught using her powers on the mat, Maren and Bragen are ordered to escort her to her room.[5] The next day, as Violet's squad absorbs Cat's drift, Maren chastises Cat for giving Violet a hard time, reminding her that Violet did not drop Luella.[6] As the squad struggles to become a cohesive unit, Rhiannon assigns study partners, pairing up Maren and Violet.[7]
Cat carries with her a fire rune that Maren made and reveals that all the fliers make the runes they are best at and trade with each other so they all have what they need.[8]
When Violet warns the fliers that they won't be able to access magic from their gryphons once the wards are raised properly, Maren says they are no good to their people if they cannot channel.[7] But later when Violet is in the library trying to figure out why the wards aren't fully functional, Maren, along with Cat and Trager, sits with her in a show of support.[9]
When the riders leave Aretia to defend Basgiath, Maren tells Violet that the gryphons are not happy about being left behind. She gives Violet a small crossbow with a quiver full of maorsite arrowheads, imbued and runed to explode on impact. She explains that it will be a secondary weapon in case Violet runs out of daggers and shows her how easy it is to operate.[10]
When the fliers join the riders at Basgiath, Maren brings Jesinia Neilwart, the scribe who is helping to figure out how to fix the wards. Later, Maren and Daja, along with Cat and Bragen, are helping to ferry the wounded away from the battle because the gryphons cannot fly in the heavy rain that General Sorrengail has produced. She comforts Sawyer as they take him to the healers after a wyvern takes his leg.[11]
Physical Description[]
Maren is petite for a flier, though still taller than Violet, with a heart-shaped face under dark hair woven into a long single braid that falls along the bronzed ochre skin of her neck. Her eyes are described as dark and hooded. She has metal rings at her shoulder.[1]
Personality[]
Maren is kind and friendly towards the dragon riders, including Violet even though her best friend, Catriona Cordella, hates Violet. Maren earns Violet's respect by meeting her eyes every time Violet looks back to check on her while they hike up the Medaro Pass.[1]
