“Discipline falls to your units, and your wingleader is the last word. If I have to get involved…” A slow, sinister smile spreads across his face. “You don’t want me involved."

Fourth Wing

Lyron Panchek is Commandant at Basgiath War College.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

As Commandant at Basgiath War College,[1] Colonel[2] Lyron Panchek is responsible for leading the first[1] and last[2] formation of the year, welcoming new cadets and congratulating graduating ones. He also attends formations where there is important news, but otherwise avoids formation.[3]

During Mira's time in the quadrant, Panchek sends an official notice to General Sorrengail notifying her that Mira survived an assassination attempt.[4]

He is bonded to a green clubtail dragon.[3] When he was a lieutenant, Panchek wrote Tactics, A Personal Memoir.[5]

Fourth Wing[]

According to Tara, rumor has it that Panchek wants General Sorrengail's job and then General Melgren's, but Violet Sorrengail says it's unlikely he would ever ascend to that position due to General Melgren's signet allowing him to foresee any assassination attempts.[1]

Panchek is among the leadership on the dais at Threshing. He is shocked when Violet rides in on Tairn.[6]

When Xaden Riorson accuses Amber Mavis of breaking the Codex, Panchek is the leader to oversee the proceedings, though the wingleaders are the ones making the decision.[3]

When Panchek, along with Colonel Aetos, runs into Xaden and Violet on their way to the flight field one day in March, Panchek ignores them.[7]

Panchek is the one to announce the beginning of the final task of the squad battle: for squads to find and acquire, by any means necessary, the one thing most advantageous to enemies. He warns the cadets not to try to present a dragon as their find. While second squad is brainstorming, Ridoc Gamlyn suggests stealing Panchek's underwear but is quickly shot down.[8]

Panchek also begins the formation where Colonel Aetos introduces the final event of War Games.[9]

Iron Flame[]

Panchek is shocked when Xaden Riorson returns for graduation when he was reported for the death roll after the battle at Resson. After the death roll is corrected, he presides over the graduation ceremony.[2]

A new Vice-Commandant, Major Burton Varrish, is appointed at the beginning of Violet's second year. He reports only to Panchek.[10]

During the first formation of the year, Varrish's dragon, Solas, takes out at least half of Third Squad behind Violet's squad. Panchek orders the cadets back into formation from where they have scattered in shock, but when he returns to the podium his hands are shaking.

When Violet departs without leave after being tipped off that Xaden was hurt at Samara, Professor Kaori advocates to Panchek that she should not be punished for the choice her dragon made. Panchek agreed with Kaori's expert opinion and cleared her of all charges.[11]

During the Battle at Basgiath, Panchek doubts that cadets will be able to defend against the second wave of venin and wyvern that are waiting to attack. Xaden silences him with a cold, menacing tone.[12]

Onyx Storm[]

Xaden & Sgaeyl are ensnared, in a giant weighted net and are confronted by the Sage, Berwyn, who appears to have lived through what Xaden thought was his death (Iron Flame). Panchek is there and his green clubtail is also trapped. Xaden quickly realizes that Panchek is with the Venin and has turned and thinks "Panchek’s cowering, traitorous ass, putting himself between Sgaeyl and me,". He is the one who has been leaking information. "Panchek’s cowering, traitorous ass, putting himself between Sgaeyl and me." Panchek is upset with the Sage for trapping his dragon and begins to argue with him. With two alloy-hilted daggers in hand, Berwyn stabs deep between the dragon’s scales, and it desiccates, green draining from its scales and shrinking in on itself to a husk. Panchek dies. [13]

Physical Description[]

Panchek has brown eyes and thinning hair.[14] It is assumed that Panchek has a mustache, because Rhiannon uses one of her braids as a mustache while impersonating him.[10] Panchek has a politician's smile that turns sinister when he implies that cadets would not like it if he gets involved with punishments.[1] He carries a pocket watch with him.[8] Panchek wears various medals on his uniform.[14]

Personality[]

Along with with smile of a politician, Panchek talks with his hands.[1] He makes a habit of missing morning formation unless there is something important to announce.[3]
