Krovla is the southernmost Poromish province. The demonym is Krovlan.

Geography[]

Krovla is bordered by Braevick to the north, the Navarrian provinces of Tyrrendor and Elsum to the west by the Esben Mountains, the Arctile Ocean to the south, and the Bay of Malek to the east along its oceanic border.[1][2]

History[]

Treaty of Arif[]

At some point, the Treaty of Arif was established between Navarre and Krovla, allowing mutually shared airspace for both dragons and gryphons over a narrow strip of the Esben Mountains between Sumerton and Draithus.[3]

The Second Krovlan Uprising[]

The Second Krovlan Uprising, occurring 200 years ago, is mentioned briefly in two instances. In Fourth Wing, it is noted by Colonel Aetos when discussing the scribe's investigation into the archives regarding references to the power of feathertails, which were hundreds of years old. Violet Sorrengail's father had been researching the uprising and mentioned something related to feathertails, though the tome containing this information has yet to be located.[4]

The second mention appears in Iron Flame, where Violet recalls that before the Second Krovlan Uprising, healers, infantry or scribes could become generals of Navarre's armies. However, after the uprising, the role to command all of Navarre's forces was exclusively assigned to the commander of the dragon riders.[5]

The Tyrrish Rebellion and the Viscount's Alliance[]

During the Tyrrish Rebellion, Fen Riorson negotiated with Viscount Tecarus in Cordyn for an alliance between the two provinces. The deal included Fen Riorson gifting the Rybestad Chest to the Viscount in exchange for his luminary. The alliance also included a marriage betrothal between Xaden Riorson and Catriona Cordella, Tecarus' niece. The betrothal was set to begin on Catriona's twentieth birthday 632 AU but lasted only six months before Xaden broke it off.[6]

Later, in October 634 AU, a new agreement was reached between Viscount Tecarus and Brennan Sorrengail. Tecarus gifted his luminary to the revolution in exchange for the relocation of the gryphon fliers to Aretia. These fliers sough refuge in Cordyn after the fall of Zolya and its Cliffsbane Flight Academy.[7]

Journey Through Medaro Pass[]

To move the gryphon fliers to Aretia discreetly, it was decided that they must cross the Medaro Pass along the Cliffs of Dralor. Due to the perilous nature of the pass and the tension between the gryphon fliers and dragon riders, Brennan and Syrena Cordella ordered both groups to journey together to foster mutual respect and trust. Each squad of riders was paired with an equally strong drift of fliers.[8]

The fliers and their gryphons traversed the pass as a challenge akin to the parapet while the riders were tasked with providing support and disarming gryphon traps along the way, as their dragons patrolled the skies. The journey was fraught with danger, including falling rocks, missed traps, and a wyvern attack. Ridoc Gamlyn suffered two arrow wounds to the abdomen, while Violet dislocated a shoulder. Unfortunately, not all fliers and their gryphons survived. Among others unnamed, Luella fell to her death and her gryphon, Cibbelair, died shortly after. Those who successfully made it to the top were met by healers and wagons waiting to provide assistance.[8][9]

Venin Occupation[]

The venin have taken control of multiple areas in Poromiel, though the majority of Krovla remains untouched.[10] Notably, the venin bypassed Cordyn and hundreds of other miles, choosing instead to take over the city of Pavis. They remained in Pavis, making it an ideal staging area for a potential attack on Draithus.[11]

Notable Residents[]

Viscount Tecarus[]

The Viscount of Krovla, heir to the Poromiel crown, and the first ally sought out by Fen Riorson for the Tyrrish Rebellion.[12]

Catriona Cordella[]

A gryphon flier and Viscount Tecarus' niece.[6]

Syrena Cordella[]

A gryphon flier, Catriona's older sister, and Viscount Tecarus' niece.[6]

Maren[]

A gryphon flier and Catriona Cordella's best friend. She was originally from Draithus.[8]

Notable Locations[]

Cordyn[]

The seaside city on the southern coast of the Krovlan province. Is estimated to be a two-day flight from Basgiath War College.[13] Cordyn is the next largest city between Zolya and Draithus, and is the home of Viscount Tecarus.[10] For more information on the city, see its dedicated page.

Resson[]

A small village just beyond the border of Poromiel, Resson serves as both a home to roughly 300 civilians and a key trading post. According to the Trade Agreement of Resson, the village facilitates the exchange of meat and lumber from Navarre for Poromiel’s cloth and agricultural goods four times a year at Athebyne.[1] The village is located within a valley, a thousand feet below Athebyne, and the trading post is accessible via a wide gravel path that winds down the mountainside, roughly a 20-minute walk from Athebyne.[14]

Resson is enclosed by a circular stone wall, with the roofs of several buildings visible just above it. At the center of the village stands a wooden clock tower. A nearby mine entrance carved into the mountainside served as a shelter for civilians during the Battle of Resson. A few outbuildings line the road leading to the mine. The village also features a clinic, a school, multiple rows of open-air market stalls, and a rocky hillside just outside its walls.[15]

The Battle of Resson left the village in ruins. Although Professor Lewis Markham later informs the cadets during a battle briefing that the trading post was leveled due to Poromish unrest, the true cause was the devastation of the battle.[16] Over the centuries, the trading post has been frequently attacked and has changed hands no fewer than eleven times.[17]

Draithus[]

Krovla's second most populous city and the last Poromish stronghold before the Cliffs of Dralor.[12][18] It is situated approximately an hour southeast of the lake near Athebyne and lies near the Navarrian border and the sea. The city is four hours from Aretia and is ten times the size of Resson, both in land and population.[14][18][19]

Pavis[]

A town located an hour's flight east from Draithus. It was overtaken by several venin and a hoard of wyvern. Members of the rebellion fought to reclaim the town, but Mira Sorrengail ordered a retreat after Nyra Voldaren and her dragon, Malla, were killed while attempting to defend a group of civilians taking shelter in the armory. During the mission, Emery sustained a shattered leg and was taken to the healers upon returning to Aretia.[11]

Cliffs of Dralor[]

Ranges from the Arctile Ocean to the lowest plains of the Tyrrendor Plateau, reaching heights of over 12,000 feet in some areas, rendering them unflyable for gryphons. Within Navarre, there are three well-carved paths to ascend the plateau. However, along the Krovlan border, only one path exists—the Medaro Pass—considered deadly to both gryphons and fliers.[8]

Medaro Pass[]

A path that begins in a scrub oak-lined field west of Draithus and ascends the Cliffs of Dralor to the plateau. The trail, carved into the harsh grey granite of the cliffs, is barely visible and too narrow to accommodate a full wagon. It features steep, narrow ledges and switchbacks, blending seamlessly into the rocky terrain, which explains why it remained a well-kept secret for so long.[8]

The width of the trail varies, ranging from six feet at its widest points to just over a foot in areas where the pass has disintegrated. In these sections, climbers must hug the cliff walls to avoid falling into the gaping holes. The curves along the trail are the only places wide enough to allow two people to walk side by side. Gryphons cannot fly any portion of the cliffs due to the narrow ledges and the risk of triggering rockslides during attempted landings.[8]

The pass is laden with traps designed to deter Poromish intruders. These include battering-ram-sized logs at chest height, pressure triggers that unleash arrows, carved steps to impede wagons, and cracks in the cliff walls that could conceal munitions. Stones frequently break off from the terrain, posing deadly risks to climbers below. A thick cloud layer further complicates the journey, reducing visibility to just a dozen feet in higher sections. One particular section of the pass features a rope marking an untouchable area—a gap estimated to span five to six feet. Despite the dangers, it remains the only route along the Krovlan border to ascend the Cliffs of Dralor.[8]
