Jesinia Neilwart is a cadet in the Scribe Quadrant at Basgiath War College.[1]

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Jesinia has known Violet for years prior to the events of Fourth Wing.[2] She spent the year before Conscription Day studying for the scribe entrance exam with Violet Sorrengail.[1]

Fourth Wing[]

Violet takes on Archives duty and frequently chats with Jesinia there. Liam flirts with her, but is warned off by Violet who tells him Jesinia is a long-term relationship woman.

Part of her duties in the quadrant include helping anyone at Basgiath when they come to the Archives to request a book, and providing the correct scrolls for the rider cadets to transport to their various professors.[1]

Iron Flame[]

Jesinia is the top scribe in her year, and Violet is sure that she's trying for the adept path—the hardest of all degrees for scribes and the one every Curator of the Scribe Quadrant has to have.

Violet asks Jesinia for books to begin researching wards, but is unsure how much she can trust Jesinia and lies about the reason. Later, Jesinia seeks Violet out in the Riders Quadrant while Violet is on a run with Imogen to give her a book and ask for help. She asks Violet to translate something from Old Lucerish, and says she'll be in trouble for asking for help. They chat and then see a screaming second-year cadet being dragged off by Markham and two riders. Jesinia says she thinks it's her fault because the rider requested a book the previous day, and she is required to keep record of all requests. This reinforces to Violet that she can't officially ask for certain books without potential consequences.[3]

Later, Violet visits Jesinia in the Archives and mentions that the cadet they saw was executed. Jesinia said he had requested information about a border attack that she couldn't find any information on and assumed didn't exist. The rider was certain it did exist since he had family that were killed during the attack. Jesinia says she then recorded the request and sent it up her chain of command, assuming the request would help him find the information he wanted. They talk about the folklore book Violet has, and how the Archives didn't have a copy. Jesinia mentions that she has never recorded any of Violet's requests, and Violet begins to realize that "she's catching on without me having to tell her." Jesinia insists she will help Violet, but Violet is still careful not to give away anything that would get Jesinia into trouble. Violet then asks for books about the First Six and the wards. The two agree to meet up on Saturdays when it's quiet in the Archives to ensure the exchange remains off the record. Jesinia says she has one request in return—Violet's copy of The Fables of the Barrens, which she willingly trades for a classified book about the First Six. They meet again that Saturday and Jesinia gives Violet a book about the wards at Basgiath.[4]

Jesinia joins the Revolution and goes to Aretia, where she works to get a printing press running.

Onyx Storm[]

Jesinia is removed from the adept path by Colonel Markham on January 15th. Her command is then transferred to Professor Grady so that Jesinia may be the designated scribe for Quest Squad. While Markham claims she was removed from the program due to failure of three exams, Sawyer explains that the exams were designed specifically for Jesinia to fail so that Markham could punish her for deserting Basgiath and going to Aretia[5]. She proceeds to spend much of her time researching tomes for Violet's mission and attending meetings with the other members of Quest Squad, keeping record of their official discussions.

Jesinia is later part of the small group including the members of her squad that Violet informs that Xaden has turned venin. [6] This is part of Ridoc's ultimatum after he finds out that Xaden is venin during their travels as part of Quest Squad. He claims Jesinia needs to know what she's actually researching in case there's a way to slow Xaden's venin progression that she might otherwise ignore in her studies.

Post-Empyrean Series[]

Jesinia will be Curator of the Scribe Quadrant at Basgiath War College after the events of the Empyrean series complete. She will translate the events of the series from Navarrian into the modern language.[7]

Physical Description[]

Jesinia has brown eyes[8] and long brown hair covered by a cream tunic and hood with a golden rectangle on her shoulder. By 334 AU, her second year at Basgiath, her hair has grown long enough that it nearly reaches her waist when worn in a braid. Her build is slight.[9] She is deaf and uses sign language to communicate with others.[1]

Personality[]

As a scribe, she refrains from showing emotion. She has to smother her smiles. She doesn't enjoy violence and constantly asks Violet about her safety in the Riders Quadrant.[1] Violet tells Liam that Jesinia is a long-term-relationship kind of girl and someone who plans for the future.[2]

While she appears stoic, Jesinia is rebellious and often breaks rules to help her friend, varying from small acts such as not recording Violet's request for The Fables of the Barren to joining the Revolution alongside the riders.

Violet Sorrengail[]

Violet is Jesinia's close friend, and they have known each other for years. Jesinia spent the year before their Conscription Day studying with Violet to pass the Scribe Quadrant entrance exam, and she attributes her success on the exam to that year of studying with her.[1]

Sawyer Henrick[]

Sawyer and Jesinia first interact when he joins Violet on trips to the Archives to research the wards, and the two seem to be mutually interested. He learns sign language from Violet to be able to talk with her. Jesinia and Sawyer's relationship further develops during the events of Onyx Storm, with a note from Jesinia seen on Sawyer's bedside table in the infirmary[11], and Sawyer later mentioning that he's been talking to Jesinia about his struggles with losing his leg and returning to riding while Violet accompanies him to the flight field for his first time attempting to mount Sliseag since his injury,[12] pointing to a very close, supportive relationship between the two of them off-page.

Liam Mairi[]

Jesinia meets Liam when he accompanies Violet on her archive duty in Fourth Wing. Violet is initially shocked to learn that Liam can sign and communicate with her. He shamelessly flirts with her before being chastised by Violet who describes Jesinia as a "long-term-relationship woman." The two remain friends until Liam's death.[2]
