The Great War was fought over six centuries ago and ended with the unification of Navarre.

History[]

Parties who fought in the war include the First Six, General Daramor and his army, and the Isle Kingdoms as allies to the First Six.[1] In response to the Great War, dragons claimed the western lands, gryphons the central ones, and the Barrens were left abandoned. According to Navarrian archives, General Daramor and his army nearly destroyed the Continent.[2] The war ended with something killing off the venin.[3] It is also noted that during the Great War, the ability to extend wards was discovered.[4]

Leadership[]

The First Six[]

The First Six are the first group to successfully become dragon riders and they raised the first ward at Basgiath, which protects Navarre.[3] The known members of the group include Lyra and Warrick.[5] The First Six fought in The Great War against General Daramor. Their allies included the Isle Kingdoms.[1]

General Daramor[]

General Daramor fought against the First Six and almost destroyed the Continent with his army. He is the first venin. He and his army destroyed the land now known as the Barrens by draining the land of its magic.[2]

Important Events[]

Battle of Gianfar[]

This battle took place more than six centuries before the book's setting and it was pivotal to the unification of Navarre. The stronghold was not only set for siege, but was equipped with the first cross-bolt, which proved lethal against dragonkind. It was one of the final battles where gryphons and dragons actually worked alongside each other to annihilate the army of the Barrens. This battle took place before the invention of indoor plumbing.[6]

Unification[]

The Great War ended with the Unification of Navarre's six provinces and the crowning of King Reginald.[7] This happens 633 years before the beginning of Fourth Wing. During Unification, the First Six created the wardstone at Basgiath.[3] This is also when the dragons decided to use The Vale as their collective hatching grounds.[4] Once the kingdom was unified, Navarre gave one year for any citizens to move within their border before sealing themselves from the world.[8]
