The Fliers Branch is one of the various branches of military within the Poromish army. Flier cadets train at Cliffsbane Flight Academy.

General Information[]
Fliers are the Poromish soldiers who bond and ride gryphons. Gryphons and fliers bond for life. So, unlike riders, if a flier dies then a gryphon will die shortly after.[1]
They do not wield signets, however, they each have a unique ability they call gifts. Fliers are they labeled by their gryphon's gift abilities. Most of their lesser-magic gifts include mindwork; it's the only area where fliers have an upper hand on riders.[2] Fliers have weapons training, including swords, bows, and crossbolts, as well as the ability to fly. However, gryphons do not have the ability to fly at high altitudes.

Harvest[]
In order for flyers to be chosen, they walk to the edge of Cliffsbane and look out over the river, which is around 30 feet deep at that point, and wait for the drift of gryphons to fly by. When they do, the flyer candidates jump of and try to land on a gryphon. If they are able to land on a gryphon, climb into position, and hold on, the gryphon bonds to them. This process is called Harvest. If they are unable to land on a gryphon, they land in the water and swim to shore and are then permitted to join a different branch of the military. The infantry and artillery are the most common branches for failed fliers to join.[3]
Uniforms[]
Fliers wear dark brown flight leathers, while flier cadets wear light-brown leathers with different symbols embroidered on their collars.[2] The uniforms feature metal rings at the shoulder.[3]

Nightwing[]
These drifts specialize in the fight against Venin. They are stationed at outposts facing The Barrens.
Summitwing[]
These drifts are stationed along the border with Navarre. Fliers stationed here are best suited for altitude, especially flying the summits of the Esben mountain range.[3]
Seawing[]
These drifts are stationed along coastal outposts.
