Elsum is a Navarrian province located along the eastern border.

Geography[]

Elsum is the easternmost province in Navarre. It is bordered by Morraine to the north, Deaconshire to the west, and Tyrrendor to the southwest. It also borders all three Poromish provinces to the east, with the Tage and Esben Mountains forming a natural border.

Notable locations within Elsum include the outpost Samara, as well as the villages Chakir and Sumerton.

History[]

Elsum was one of the provinces that spoke the common language before Unification.[1]

Notable Locations[]

Chakir[]

A small village located near the eastern border of Navarre, within the Esben Mountains, which marks the border with the Braevick province of Poromiel. Situated at an altitude of just under 10,000 feet, the village’s high elevation makes it an unlikely target for gryphon attacks, as gryphons don't tolerate altitude as well as dragons.[2]

Despite this, Chakir experienced an attack by a drift of Braevi gryphons and riders when the wards along the Esben Mountains faltered. The attack resulted in the loss of thirty-seven civilian lives in the hour before a squad from the Eastern Wing arrived. While the riders and dragons managed to repel the drift, the battle left one rider dead and a dragon injured.[2]

The attack raised questions about the gryphons’ tactics, as the high altitude and proximity to a nearby outpost rendered Chakir an illogical target unless the attackers knew the wards would fail. By the time the Eastern Wing arrived, several buildings in the village had been burned, and others were in the process of being looted.[2]

Keldavi[]

An outpost along the Braevick border.[3]

Sumerton[]

A small, high-altitude village located on the southern border of Elsum and the Krovla province of Poromiel, within the Esben Mountains. During Fourth Wing, it is revealed through a scroll intended for Professor Lewis Markham—accidentally seen by Violet Sorrengail and Liam Mairi—that the village had been attacked. The attack included the looting of a supply convoy and the ransacking of community storage within nearby caves, raising concerns given Navarre's existing trade agreement with Poromiel.[4]

The mountainous village is also significant due to the Treaty of Arif, an agreement that allows Navarre's dragons and Krovla's gryphons to share a narrow strip of airspace between Sumerton and Draithus.[5]

Samara[]

A large Navarrian military outpost located on the eastern side of the Elsum province, bordering the Poromish provinces of Krovla and Braevick.[6] For more information, see its dedicated page.

Notable Residents[]

Lieutenant Colonel Degrensi[]

Commander of the Samara outpost in the Elsum province of Navarre. He implemented a rule requiring those stationed at Samara to earn, fight for, and defend their claim to a pass for leave rather than being granted one automatically.[7] Degrensi also sent a missive to General Augustine Melgren requesting the reassignment of Major Varrish after three prisoners died during interrogations under Varrish's watch at Samara.[8]

Lieutenant Jarrett[]

A member of the Navarrian Military stationed at the Samara outpost in the Elsum province. He fought Xaden Riorson in Samara's makeshift fighting chamber to defend the only available pass for leave allocated to lieutenants that weekend. Though Jarrett lost the match, Xaden chose to split the pass with him, granting both lieutenants with 24 hours of leave each. Jarrett is described as bulky, built similarly to Garrick Tavis, and appearing to have 20 pounds on Xaden.[7]

Lieutenant Cornelia Sahalie[]

A member of the Navarrian Military stationed at the Samara outpost in the Elsum province. She was responsible for relaying the results of the fight between Xaden Riorson and Lieutenant Jarrett for the only pass to available to lieutenants that weekend to an unnamed major, ensuring their allotted leave time was reflected in the patrol roster.[7] For more information, see their dedicated page.
