“ | If we ever choose to invade enemy territory—which we don’t—I would choose Zolya as my first target. Take out Cliffsbane Academy and you take out years of gryphon riders in one strike. | ” |
–Tactics, a Personal Memoir by Lieutenant Lyron Panchek |
Cliffsbane Flight Academy was the Poromish version of Basgiath War College.
Geography[]
Cliffsbane Flight Academy was situated in Zolya, the second most populous city in the Braevick province. Zolya lies at the foot of the Esben Mountains, along the Stonewater River, and is approximately a four-hour flight from Navarre's border.[1][2]
History[]
Located in Zolya, the second most populous city in Braevick, Cliffsbane Flight Academy was dedicated to training gryphon fliers.[1] Before Zolya was destroyed by venin, who subsequently took up residence in the academy, the school had approximately 300 students. Following its destruction, around 100 of those cadets managed to take shelter with Viscount Tecarus in Cordyn.[3][4] After an alliance was forged between the Viscount and Brennan Sorrengail, these sheltered fliers were integrated and trained alongside the 101 riders who left Basgiath War College to join the Revolution in Aretia.[5][6][7][8]
Cliffsbane cadets begin their training a year later than Basgiath cadets, typically starting at age 21 instead of 20.[9]
Harvest[]
Cliffbane Flight Academy's own version of Threshing, though noted as considerably less cruel.[10] In order for fliers to be chosen, they walk to the edge of Cliffsbane and look out over the river, which is around 30 feet deep at that point, and wait for the drifts of gryphons to fly by. When they do, the flier candidates jump of and try to land on a gryphon. If they are able to land on a gryphon, climb into position, and hold on, the gryphon bonds to them. This process is called Harvest. If they are unable to land on a gryphon, they land in the water, swim to shore and are then permitted to join a different branch of the military. The infantry and artillery are the most common branches for failed fliers to join.[9]
Uniforms[]
Fliers wear dark brown flight leathers, while cadets wear light-brown leathers adorned with different symbols embroidered on their collars.[3][11]
Branches[]
Fliers Branch[]
Those in the fliers branch are bonded to gryphons and trained to fight with their drifts.
Infantry Branch[]
Those trained for fighting in ground combat. It is a popular secondary choice for flier candidates who don't succeed during Harvest.[9]
Artillery Branch[]
Those trained using long-range weaponry. Like the infantry branch, it is a common choice for those who fail to bond with a gryphon during Harvest.[9]
