Bodhi Durran is a dragon rider and the cousin of Xaden Riorson. He was one of the one hundred and seven underage children of prominent leaders of the Tyrrish Rebellion at the time of the Apostasy, and bears a rebellion relic as a consequence of this. He has an active role in the rebellion alongside Xaden, Garrick Tavis, and Imogen Cardulo.
Biography[]
Before Basgiath[]
“ | "After Liam, Bodhi was and still is the closest thing I have to a brother, perpetually tagging along a step behind." | ” |
–Recovered correspondence between Xaden and Violet, Iron Flame |
Bodhi is Xaden Riorson's younger cousin, although in a letter to Violet Sorrengail Xaden describes him as more like brother to him. [1] Violet observes in Aretia that Bodhi is comfortable at Riorson House (along with Imogen),[2] although the amount of time he spent there growing up is unknown.
First Year[]
As part of the deal Xaden Riorson made with General Sorrengail, Bodhi, like all the children of the leaders of the Tyrrish Rebellion, was forced to enter the Riders Quadrant.
Not much is known of Bodhi's first year in the Quadrant, , but based on Xaden’s words during the meeting with the marked ones beneath the tree he would have attended similar meetings run by Xaden along with other first year marked ones, including Imogen Cardulo, Eya, and Ciaran. [3]
As Bodhi becomes Executive Officer of Tail Section in his second year, it’s also assumed he does exceptionally well in his first year.
“ | Positions of power are held by elite third-years. Second-years can rise to squad leaders, but only if they’re exceptional. | ” |
–Violet Sorrengail regarding leadership positions at Basgiath, Fourth Wing |
Fourth Wing[]
During his second year, Bodhi is the Tail Section Executive Officer for Fourth Wing.
Along with around two dozen other marked ones, Bodhi attends the meeting under the tree to discuss how to help the new first years. Violet describes his features as similar to Xaden's, although softer. In the meeting he is quick to grin, tells Xaden that he thinks his words to one of the nervous first years are a little harsh, and also chides Imogen for not learning her lesson after breaking Violet's arm.[4]
Bodhi is involved in weapon drops with Xaden and Garrick during his second year. Violet spots their three dragons flying back from a mission, and hears the three of them talking in hushed voices when they return. Bodhi argues that they should be doing more, and Garrick hisses back that they're doing everything they can.[5]
“ | There has to be something more we can do | ” |
–Bodhi Durran to Garrick Tavis and Xaden Riorson after a secret mission, Fourth Wing |
After Violet is attacked by the unbonded cadets in her room, Bodhi, along with Garrick and two other marked ones, arrive to help Xaden, although he's already killed them all. Bodhi says, "let me guess, we're on clean-up?" They remove the bodies,[6] and the next morning at Formation both Bodhi and Garrick stand up as witnesses to the attack.[7]
After the celebration for Reunification Day, Violet goes looking for Xaden and finds Bodhi and Garrick waiting for him at the end of the parapet. When she says to them, "tell me he's not out there," Bodhi responds, "I could tell you that, but I'd be lying." Garrick then reminds her that Xaden doesn't even want to see them, even though he and Bodhi are Xaden's best friends.[8]
The day after Reunification Day, the entire quadrant is called to an urgent, mandatory formation that turns out to be the last event of War Games. Bodhi, along with eight other riders including Liam Mairi, Imogen Cardulo, Soleil Telery, Masen Sanborn, Garrick and Violet, are all part of the squad Xaden selects for his "headquarters." They are assigned the post at Athebyne.[9]
Their riot stops at a lake close to Athebyne for water. When the fliers find Xaden and Violet behind a rock together, Bodhi is one of the first riders to arrive at the scene.[10] They discover that they've walked into a trap and that Resson is being attacked by the venin. Bodhi asks how many people live there, and is the first to say they should fight to save the civilians.[11]
“ | "So we should just stand here while civilians die?" | ” |
–Bodhi Durran to Xaden Riorson on joining the battle in Resson, Fourth Wing |
Two fliers warn them that joining the battle will be tantamount to a death sentence, and that they should leave. Imogen Cardulo says that defending the defenseless is what riders do, however, and Bodhi is quick to agree with her.[11]
“ | "You saved every one of us here, cousin. ... And we're thankful. Now, I'd like to do what we've trained for, and if it means I don't go home, then I guess my soul will be commended to Malek. I wouldn't mind seeing my mother anyway." | ” |
–Bodhi Durran to Xaden Riorson on joining the battle at Resson, Fourth Wing |
During the battle at Resson, Xaden asks Violet and Tairn to cover Garrick and Bodhi so they can get the townspeople evacuated. Bodhi and Garrick are also seen on foot after that chasing the venin from the clock tower with daggers in hand.[11] One of Violet's lightning strikes causes an explosion that distracts a rather large wyvern that had been on Bodhi's tail, giving him a moment's advantage and allowing his dragon to sink its teeth into the wyverns neck, killing it.[11]
Bodhi survives the battle, though his arm is broken in four places where a venin fractured it.[12] When Violet is severely injured and they aren't sure what to do or where to take her, Bodhi snaps at someone commenting flippantly on Violet's lightning strikes. He supports taking Violet to Aretia, saying to Xaden "No need for orders, man. We'll save her."[13]
“ | "She saved your fucking life. She saved all our lives." | ” |
–Bodhi Durran to an unnamed rider about Violet Sorrengail, Fourth Wing |
In Aretia while Xaden is waiting for Violet to shower, Bodhi does his best to lighten Xaden's mood "like he always does." We also learn that he is still in a sling after the battle. Upon seeing Violet emerge from her room, Bodhi says that it's good to see her up and about again, and tells Xaden he'll "fetch the back-up plan, and good luck."[14]
Iron Flame[]
In his third year, he was originally assigned as Section Leader of the Fourth Wing's Tail Section. However, after Solas killed many cadets after Parapet, he was reassigned to Section Leader of Flame Section.
Bodhi helps Violet to transport shipments to Xaden. He is the first to mention Cat to Violet, and asks her to forget about it. He also tells her he has fought off two assassination attempts, at least one of which was in the bathing chamber. Bodhi walks her to Tairn, and is there when she is searched. Varrish tries to dismiss him, but Bodhi quotes the codex and is allowed to stay. Violet realizes Bodhi set her up and he admits it was a test to see if they would search Tairn. [15]
After Violet's near burnout with Varrish and Carr, Bodhi arrives with Imogen and Eya to help her. Bodhi relays that Cuir says she needs food to help with burnout. Bodhi says he will "handle it" and that it won't happen again, but relents to let Tairn take care of it. [16]
Physical Description[]
Bodhi is described as handsome with a strong brow line, brown eyes, and tawny brown skin crowned by a cloud of black curls. He has a quick grin according to Violet. He wears a litany of patches under his cloak. His features are described to be closely resembling Xaden's,[17] just less angular. Violet sees him as a softer and more approachable version of Xaden. His smile resembles that of his deceased mother.[14]
