–Andarna to Violet Sorrengail |
Andarnaurram, more commonly known as Andarna, is an adolescent scorpiontail dragon, from a previously unknown 7th breed, capable of changing the color of her scales. She bonded Violet Sorrengail as her rider.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
According to Tairn, Andarna's parents passed before she hatched. She is looked after by Tairn and Sgaeyl, as well as other dragon elders.
Andarna waited 650 years to hatch. She waited until Violet's 18th birthday, when she heard the elders talk about the weakling daughter of their general, the girl forecasted to become the head of the scribes, and she knew Violet would have the mind of a scribe and the heart of a rider. She knew then Violet would be hers. She was left behind by her breed to breathe fire for the wardstone, from what she can remember.
Fourth Wing[]
Andarna is approximately 2 years old when she meets Violet Sorrengail and chooses her as her rider. She will be full-grown in a year or two. During Presentation, she flew from the Vale and joined the dragons as cadets were presented. Some of the cadets saw the small Feathertail as weak and helpless, and therefore unworthy. During Threshing, Violet overheard Jack Barlowe, Oren Seifert, and Tynan plotting to kill the Feathertail. She chose to defend the dragon from the group. While Violet chased off Jack, the other two wounded her, but she and Andarna were joined by Tairn, who incinerated Tynan. When it was time for Violet to officially announce her dragon bond, she was surprised to find that not only did Tairn choose her, but Andarna as well, making Violet the first rider to bond two dragons.
Some time after bonding, Violet trains in flying with Tairn, but not Andarna, as she is too small to bear a rider. Violet is attacked while asleep by a few unbonded cadets wanting to kill her in hopes of bonding with Tairn, and Andarna uses her power through Violet, briefly stopping time and allowing Violet to get away as Xaden arrived, killing her attackers. The two riders meet their dragons, and realize Andarna (and Feathertail dragons, in general) is not yet fully matured and thus was able to push her full powers through to Violet, without Violet developing a signet. Using the power caused Andarna to suffer exhaustion for days after the attack. Violet and Xaden promise to keep the secret between them.
Andarna allows Violet to use their signet once again during the first War Games, to help Violet save Liam Mairi in time when he falls from his dragon.
Andarna has trouble keeping up with Tairn during long flights, so Xaden designs a saddle for her to link under Tairn whenever she's tired, so she can fly with him and Violet more often.
During the Battle of Resson, Tairn and Violet command Andarna to stay hidden, as it is dangerous for her. She doesn't listen, however, and at a critical time, stops time for Violet, so she can strike a venin with her lightling. She also catches Violet when she falls from Tairn, saving her life. But using all that power and being away from the Vale made Andarna grow faster than she was supposed to. When Violet wakes up in Aretia after the battle, she notices her bond to Andarna isn't golden anymore, and Xaden mentions in his chapter that she's now huge.
Iron Flame[]
When Violet wakes up in Aretia and finally gets to see Andarna, she finds her sleeping, and now a Black Dragon, smaller than average, but bigger than before. Tairn explains Andarna is now a teenager, a complicated age for dragons, and that they need to take her back to the Vale, where she needs to go into he Dreamless Sleep for a few weeks and develop.
They manage to do it, but Andarna wakes up a few times during her sleep, when she shouldn't. It also takes her longer than necessary. While Andarna is in her sleep, Violet does her best to keep her hidden, refusing Vice-Commandant Varrish to bring her to lessons and taking punishments for it.
When Violet is captured and tortured by Varrish, Andarna remains in her Dreamless Sleep. She also sleeps once she is rescued and everyone moves to Aretia, being carried by Tairn the whole way there. Once in the Valley the following day, she finally awakes. She now looks like a Black Scorpiontail, although Violet notes her scales are shimmering and seem to reflect the colors around her. Andarna has trouble expanding one of her wings, and easily loses balance, and Tairn explains secretly to Violet that the mass expanditure of energy in Resson forced her into a rapid rate of growth, and instead of being at the Vale in Basgiath or the Valley at Aretia, she spent that day travelling. And then she was moved again, and woke up several times, making her growth unpredictable. The seconds set of muscles that's supposed to be along the front of her wings did not develop, so now she needs to strengthen the existing muscle to compensate and be able to fly, however, she won't ever be able to bear a rider.
Andarna remains a teenager throughout the rest of the book, constantly making snarky comments at Violet and Tairn, and not listening to them. She also keeps on growing size. She is there to help Violet when she, Sloane and Cat get trapped into a cave with Solas. Andarna goes to Violet's rescue, and ends up killing Solas. She is then questioned by the elders, who find her actions justifiable, but Tairn explains to Violet that to slay another dragon is a heavy mark upon the soul, even when in defense of yourself or your rider.
Near the end of the book, when everyone is back in Basgiath for the final battle, Jesinia finishes translating Lyra's Journal, and Violet realizes the truth, and asks Andarna about it. It is revealed she is not a Black dragon at all, but a 7th breed, whose scales change color. She explains to Violet only the elders know about it, and that she hand't told her because if she couldn't figure it out by herself, she wasn't worthy of knowing. Andarna then confesses she waited 650 years to hatch, until Violet's 18th birthday, when she heard the elders talk about the weakling daughter of their general, the girl forecasted to become the head of the scribes, and she knew Violet would have the mind of a scribe and the heart of a rider. She knew then Violet would be hers. Andarna was left behind by her breed to breathe fire for the wardstone, from what she can remember.
Physical Description[]
Andarna is a Gold Feathertail. She is missing her dragon claws and is just about large enough in size to carry Violet. Her voice in Violet's mind is described as high and sweet. After waking up from her Dreamless Sleep, she develops a Scorpiontail. She can now change the color of her scales, a trait only attributed to the Seventh Breed, though she disguises as a black dragon. She is missing the second set of muscles along the fronts of her wings that form during the growth process, impacting her ability to fly for long periods as well as bear a rider.
Personality[]
Andarna is cheerful and bright, especially as a Feathertail and under the guidance of Tairn and Sgaeyl. After she becomes an Adolescent, her attitude changes and resembles that of a moody teenager: ready to eat any ally that causes trouble and commonly growling when angered easily.
Power and Abilities[]
Powers[]
For the events in Fourth Wing, Andarna was able to stop time for a short periods. However it drained her and it took her more than a week of rest to recover. Due to over-use in the battle against the Venin it caused her growth to accelerate. After becoming an Adolescent in Iron Flame, she is capable of blending in with the terrain and changing the color of her scales. She can breathe fire and now has sharp talons.
